We acquired the Shirley Martin collection consequently of the simple donation offer throughout the Sydney 2000 Olympics of the 1956 Olympics towel. From 1944 to 1946, Shirley would be a youthful art student attending classes on Fridays and nights at East Sydney Technical College. Throughout this same period, Shirley launched into certainly one of her initial jobs. She required around the technically challenging role of converting Australian artist Russell Drysdale’s works of art and sketches into multi-coloured designs for screenprinted decorating materials. At that time, she only agreed to be 17 and dealing within the Design Department of Silk and Textile Ink jet printers (STP) in Darlinghurst.

Shirley assisted realize Russell Drysdale’s artwork underneath the direction of Mary Curtis, mind designer at STP. The work provided her having a challenging formative experience which without doubt was her in good stead through out her career like a female industrial designer.

Drysdale’s ‘Tree Forms’ was produced from sketches obtained from a sketchbook and arranged informally to accomplish a complete screen. On completion, ‘Tree Forms’ was considered appropriate for decorating materials and it was created like a 12-colour print on heavy made of woll for decorating with tan like a ruling colour, in addition to a monotone print.
