Fashion Design (Formerly Fashion Merchandising)

The Fashion Merchandising program in the Department of Art is no longer accepting majors or minors. In light of this change, the faculty and advisors in the Department of Art are committed to the ensuring that all currently enrolled Fashion Merchandising majors and minors complete their program requirements and graduate in a timely manner — . All majors should meet with Dr. Stevens immediately to verify remaining courses to ensure a smooth matriculation.

The BFA in Design with a concentration in provides students with an overview of the fashion industry and the role of the consumer, with emphasis on product development. Students will explore fashion design in conjunction with the critical elements of design, forecasting, production, evaluation, branding, and sustainability of textiles, clothing, accessories, and home furnishings that globally bind consumers to products. We situate fashion in the broader study of design utilizing aesthetic, cultural, economic, geographic, historic, political, scientific, social-psychological, and technological frames of reference. A foundation in art and design coursework and an interdisciplinary approach helps students to develop theoretical, technical, and creative competencies necessary for personal and professional growth and success.

FASH 004. Introduction to the Fashion Industry. 3 credits
An overview of the fashion industry, including the design, production, evaluation, distribution, marketing, consumption, conservation, and discarding of textiles, clothing, accessories, and home furnishings within the United States and abroad and related careers. Required for majors and minors.

FASH 006. Visual Merchandising. 3 credits
An overview of visual merchandising, including a discussion of the principles and practices that guide the creation of window and promotional displays, store layout and design, and their impact on the fashion industry.

FASH 009. Fashion Studio I. 3 credits
An introduction to sewing including basic clothing construction, pattern analysis, and clothing evaluation, while developing an understanding of terminology and tools.

FASH 102. African American Dress. 3 credits
An introduction to the social, economic, cultural, geographical, historical and political forces which have impacted the decisions of African Americans in the United States with respect to clothing and appearance(s). Prerequisite(s): Two courses in psychology, sociology, or anthropology. FULFILLS THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CLUSTER REQUIREMENT. Required for majors.
